Refractive index n=c/v=sin⁡i/sin⁡rn = c/v = \sin i/\sin r — a measure of how much a medium slows and bends light.

The refractive index nn of a medium tells how much the medium slows down light and hence bends a ray. It is defined in two equivalent ways:

  1. In terms of speed of light:

    n=cv,n=\frac{c}{v},

    where cc is the speed of light in vacuum and vv its speed in the medium. Since v<cv<c, always n>1n>1 (for vacuum n=1n=1).

  2. In terms of Snell's law: for a ray passing from vacuum into the medium with angle of incidence ii and angle of refraction rr,

    n=sin⁡isin⁡r.n=\frac{\sin i}{\sin r}.
