Power of accommodation is defined as the ability of the eye to focus objects lying at different distances on the retina by changing the focal length (and hence the power) of its lens.
- The eye lens is flexible. Ciliary muscles attached to it can change its curvature: when they contract, the lens becomes more curved (shorter focal length, more power) to see near objects; when they relax, the lens flattens (longer focal length, less power) to see distant objects.
- Because the image distance (eye-lens to retina) is fixed, this change in focal length is what keeps the image sharp on the retina for objects between the near point (~25 cm for a normal eye) and the far point (infinity). …
