Donor impurity = pentavalent atom that donates a free electron → n-type; acceptor impurity = trivalent atom that creates a hole → p-type.

Donor impurities. When a pentavalent atom (five valence electrons — e.g. arsenic, phosphorus, antimony) is doped into a tetravalent semiconductor such as silicon or germanium, four of its electrons form covalent bonds with neighbouring semiconductor atoms, while the fifth electron is loosely bound and becomes free to conduct even at room temperature. Since the impurity 'donates' a free electron, it is called a donor impurity; the doped semiconductor becomes n-type (majority carriers are electrons).
