α=IC/IE\alpha = I_C/I_E (common-base gain, <1); β=IC/IB\beta = I_C/I_B (common-emitter gain, large); related by β=α/(1−α)\beta = \alpha/(1-\alpha).

α\alpha parameter (common-base current gain). It is the ratio of collector current to emitter current in the common-base configuration:

α=ICIE.\alpha = \frac{I_C}{I_E}.

Since most, but not all, of the emitter current reaches the collector, α\alpha is slightly less than 1 (typically 0.95–0.99).

β\beta parameter (common-emitter current gain). It is the ratio of collector current to base current in the common-emitter configuration:

β=ICIB.\beta = \frac{I_C}{I_B}.

Because the base current is very small, β\beta is large (typically 20–200).
