A wavefront is the surface joining all points that oscillate in the same phase; rays are perpendicular to it.

When a wave (such as light) travels through a medium, the disturbance reaches different points at different times. At any instant we can join all the points that are in the same phase of vibration — this continuous surface is called a wavefront.

Key points:

  • Every point on a wavefront vibrates in the same phase.
  • The rays (direction of propagation) are always perpendicular to the wavefront.
  • The shape of the wavefront depends on the source:
    • A point source gives a spherical wavefront.
    • A line source gives a cylindrical wavefront.
    • A source at infinity (parallel rays) gives a plane wavefront. …
