With reference to the following indifference map, which of the following curve represents highest satisfaction level ? [FIGURE]
Figure for question 11
Figure. An indifference map with a vertical Y-axis labelled 'Goods Y' and a horizontal X-axis labelled 'Goods X'. Origin marked O; point T marked on the X-axis. Three convex-to-origin, downward-sloping indifference curves are drawn, labelled (from the innermost/lowest to the outermost/highest): IC1 (innermost, closest to origin), IC2 (middle), IC3 (outermost, farthest from origin).

The farther an indifference curve is from the origin, the higher the satisfaction — so the outermost curve IC3 is the highest.

Step 1 — Rule for an indifference map

An indifference map is a set of indifference curves. A key property: a higher (farther-out) indifference curve represents a higher level of satisfaction, because points on it contain larger quantities of the goods (more of X and/or Y).

Step 2 — Apply to the given map

The map (see figure) shows three curves ranked from innermost to outermost: IC1 (closest to origin), IC2 (middle), IC3 (farthest). Therefore:

  • IC1 → lowest satisfaction (closest to O).
  • IC2 → middle.
  • IC3 → highest satisfaction (farthest from O). ✓
