Taylor's principles/techniques: science not rule of thumb, harmony, cooperation, development of workers, functional foremanship, and standardisation.

Six principles/techniques propounded by F. W. Taylor:

  1. Science, not Rule of Thumb — Work should be done by a scientifically studied 'one best method', not by guesswork or tradition.

  2. Harmony, not Discord — There should be complete harmony between management and workers (a 'mental revolution' on both sides).

  3. Cooperation, not Individualism — Management and workers should cooperate and share responsibility and gains instead of competing.

  4. Development of workers — Each worker should be scientifically selected, trained and developed to his greatest efficiency and prosperity.

  5. Functional foremanship — A technique in which a worker is supervised by eight specialised foremen (four for planning, four for doing) so that expert supervision is available.
