On-the-job training: learning at the real workplace while doing the job; off-the-job: learning away from the workplace in a classroom setting.

Four differences between on-the-job and off-the-job training:

  1. Place — On-the-job training is given at the actual place of work; off-the-job training is given away from the workplace, in a training centre or classroom.

  2. Method — On-the-job: the worker learns by actually doing the job under guidance (apprenticeship, job rotation, internship). Off-the-job: learning through lectures, vestibule training, films and case studies.

  3. Production during training — In on-the-job training some real output is produced during training; in off-the-job training no real production takes place.
