Adverse BOP is caused by heavy imports, weak exports, domestic inflation, capital outflow and debt-servicing.

An adverse (unfavourable/deficit) balance of payments arises when a country's payments to the rest of the world exceed its receipts. Its main causes (any four):

  1. Excessive imports — Large imports of capital goods, crude oil, technology and luxury goods for development or consumption raise payments abroad.
  2. Low or slow-growing exports — Poor quality, high cost and lack of competitiveness of domestic goods keep export earnings low.
  3. High domestic inflation — When domestic prices rise faster than abroad, home goods become costlier, so exports fall and imports rise.
