Biotechnology harnesses living systems for human benefit; in medicine it enables recombinant drug production, gene therapy, and rapid disease diagnosis.

Biotechnology (as defined by the European Federation of Biotechnology) is the integration of natural sciences and organisms, cells, parts thereof, and molecular analogues, for products and services — in simple terms, the use of live organisms, cells, or their enzymes/products to make products and processes useful to humans.

Three applications of biotechnology in medicine:

  1. Production of recombinant therapeutic proteins (e.g. insulin): Genes for human proteins such as insulin are inserted into microorganisms (e.g. E. coli), which then produce the protein in bulk. Humulin, the first recombinant human insulin, is produced this way and is used to treat diabetes mellitus, replacing insulin earlier extracted from animal pancreas (which sometimes triggered allergic reactions).
  2. Gene therapy: Biotechnology allows correction of a genetic defect by inserting a normal, functional gene into an individual's cells to compensate for a defective/missing gene — e.g. treatment of Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) deficiency by introducing lymphocytes carrying a functional ADA cDNA, or via bone-marrow stem cells for a permanent cure. …
