Colour blindness is X-linked recessive. A colour-blind father × carrier mother cross produces 1/4 colour-blind daughters, 1/4 carrier daughters, 1/2 normal sons, 1/2 colour-blind sons.

Colour blindness is a sex-linked (X-linked recessive) trait. Let X^C = normal (dominant) allele, X^c = colour-blind (recessive) allele.

  • Colour-blind male parent = X^c Y
  • Carrier female parent = X^C X^c (phenotypically normal, but carries the recessive allele)

Pedigree/cross description (in place of a drawing):

Parents: X^c Y (colour-blind ♂) × X^C X^c (carrier ♀)

Gametes: X^c, Y X^C, X^c

Offspring (Punnett square):
              X^C X^c
   X^c X^C X^c (carrier ♀) X^c X^c (colour-blind ♀)
   Y X^C Y (normal ♂) X^c Y (colour-blind ♂)

Pedigree symbols: squares = males, circles = females; fully shaded = affected (colour-blind), half-shaded = carrier, unshaded = unaffected.

  • Colour-blind father (shaded square) and carrier mother (half-shaded circle) are joined as parents. …
