Apomixis is an asexual, clonal method of seed formation that looks like sexual reproduction but skips meiosis and fertilisation.

In most angiosperms, seeds form after meiosis (to produce haploid gametes) and fertilisation. In apomixis, this is bypassed: the embryo develops directly from the diploid egg cell without fertilisation, or from other diploid cells of the ovule such as the nucellus, and yet a normal-looking seed is formed. Because no genetic recombination occurs, the offspring are genetically identical (clones) to the mother plant.
