Resonance stabilisation of the phenoxide ion makes phenol far more acidic than an ordinary alcohol.

When phenol (C₆H₅OH) loses a proton, it forms the phenoxide ion (C₆H₅O⁻). The negative charge on oxygen in the phenoxide ion is not localised — it is delocalised into the benzene ring through resonance, spreading over the oxygen and the ortho/para carbons of the ring. This delocalisation stabilises the phenoxide ion, shifting the equilibrium

C6H5OH⇌C6H5O−+H+C_6H_5OH \rightleftharpoons C_6H_5O^- + H^+

towards ionisation. In addition, the sp²-hybridised ring carbon attached to oxygen is more electronegative than an sp³ alkyl carbon, further polarising and weakening the O–H bond.
