Alkylating methylamine with an alkyl halide (Hofmann's ammonolysis-type alkylation) converts the primary amine into the secondary amine, dimethylamine.

Methylamine (CH3NH2) is a nucleophile because of the lone pair on nitrogen. It can be converted to dimethylamine by reacting it with a methylating agent such as methyl iodide (CH3I), in a nucleophilic substitution:

CH3NH2 + CH3I → (CH3)2NH·HI → (CH3)2NH + HI

The nitrogen lone pair of methylamine attacks the electrophilic carbon of CH3I, displacing iodide and adding a second methyl group onto nitrogen, giving the secondary amine dimethylamine, (CH3)2NH.
