Methylamine (CH₃NH₂, one carbon) must gain one carbon to become ethylamine (CH₃CH₂NH₂, two carbons). This is achieved through the nitrile (cyanide) route, because reduction of a nitrile –C≡N adds a –CH₂– and yields a primary amine:
