A coordination compound has a central metal ion bonded to ligands through coordinate bonds, forming a complex ion whose properties differ from its constituent simple ions.

A coordination compound (or complex compound) is a compound in which a central metal atom or ion is linked to a number of ions or neutral molecules, called ligands, through coordinate (dative) covalent bonds — where the ligand donates both electrons of the shared pair to the metal. The metal-ligand unit, called a complex ion, retains its identity in solution and its properties are quite different from those of the free metal ion and free ligands.
