Reading a carbon resistor's colour code: the first two bands give the significant digits and the third gives the power-of-ten multiplier.

A carbon resistor's colour code assigns each colour a digit value:

Black=0, Brown=1, Red=2, Orange=3, Yellow=4, Green=5, Blue=6, Violet=7, Grey=8, White=9.

For a resistor with bands Red, Green, Orange (read in order):

  • 1st band (Red) → 1st significant digit = 2
  • 2nd band (Green) → 2nd significant digit = 5
  • 3rd band (Orange) → multiplier = 10310^3

So the resistance is

R=25×103 Ω=25,000 Ω=25 kΩR = 25 \times 10^3\ \Omega = 25{,}000\ \Omega = 25\ \text{k}\Omega
