Using Einstein's mass-energy relation with the photon energy E=hνE = h\nu gives m=hν/c2m = h\nu/c^2.

A photon is a quantum (packet) of electromagnetic radiation. Its energy is given by Planck's relation:

E=hνE = h\nu

where hh is Planck's constant and ν\nu is the frequency of the radiation.

A photon has no rest mass, but while travelling at speed cc it possesses energy, and by Einstein's mass-energy equivalence relation,

E=mc2E = mc^2

Equating the two expressions for energy:

mc2=hν  ⟹  m=hνc2mc^2 = h\nu \implies m = \frac{h\nu}{c^2}
