Any accelerating (oscillating) charge radiates electromagnetic waves; feeding a high-frequency alternating current into an antenna makes the charges in it oscillate and radiate radio waves outward.

Electromagnetic (radio) waves are produced whenever an electric charge is accelerated — in practice, this is done by making charges oscillate rapidly back and forth in a conductor.

To generate radio waves, an electronic oscillator circuit (an LC tank circuit together with an amplifying/active device) produces a high-frequency alternating current. This current is fed into a metallic antenna (aerial). As the current in the antenna oscillates, the free electrons in it are accelerated back and forth, and this time-varying, accelerating charge radiates energy outward as electromagnetic waves — in the radio-frequency range, these are called radio waves. The mutually perpendicular oscillating electric and magnetic fields propagate away from the antenna at the speed of light.

Two important uses of radio waves: …
