A bar magnet and a solenoid behave like equivalent magnetic dipoles from outside, but differ in origin, controllability, and internal structure of the field.

Three differences between a bar magnet and a current-carrying solenoid:

  1. Source of magnetism: A bar magnet's magnetism arises from the intrinsic atomic/electron spin and orbital magnetic moments aligned within the material (permanent magnetism); a solenoid's magnetism arises purely from the electric current flowing through its turns (electromagnetism), and disappears the moment the current is switched off.

  2. Controllability: The magnetic moment of a bar magnet is fixed (cannot easily be changed) once magnetised; the magnetic moment of a solenoid, M=NIAM = NIA, can be increased or decreased at will by changing the current II or the number of turns NN, and its polarity can even be reversed by reversing the current direction.
