In a diamagnetic material the induced atomic magnetic moments oppose the applied field, so the material is feebly and negatively magnetized and weakly repelled by a magnet.

Diamagnetic substances are those whose atoms/molecules have no net (permanent) magnetic dipole moment on their own. When placed in an external magnetic field BB, the field induces a small magnetic moment in each atom that points opposite to BB (by Lenz's-law-like electromagnetic induction at the atomic level), so the material becomes weakly magnetized in the direction opposite to the applied field. Examples include bismuth, copper, water, and gold.
