A financial market is where financial assets are created and exchanged; it mobilises savings, determines prices, provides liquidity and lowers transaction costs.

Meaning. A financial market is a market for the creation and exchange of financial assets such as shares, debentures and bonds. It acts as a link between savers (those with surplus funds) and investors/borrowers (those who need funds), allocating the economy's scarce savings to the most productive uses. It has two segments — the money market (short-term funds) and the capital market (medium- and long-term funds).

Important functions of a financial market:

  • Facilitating price discovery: the interaction of demand (from investors/households) and supply (from businesses) in the market determines the price of financial assets.
