Gaining Ratio is always computed as New Ratio minus Old Ratio, for each continuing partner.

When a partner retires or dies, the remaining (continuing) partners acquire the departing partner's share of profit between themselves. The ratio in which they acquire this extra share is called the Gaining Ratio.

Formula:

Gaining Ratio = New Share − Old Share (for each continuing partner)

This is the exact opposite of the Sacrificing Ratio used at the time of admission, where a new partner comes IN and the old partners give up (sacrifice) part of their share — there, Sacrificing Ratio = Old Share − New Share.
