Working capital needs depend chiefly on the nature of the business, its scale, and its operating cycle.

1. Nature of business: A trading or service firm has a short operating cycle and generally needs less working capital, while a manufacturing firm (especially one making products with a long production process, like machinery) needs to hold more raw material, work-in-progress and finished stock, requiring higher working capital.

2. Scale of operations: Organisations operating on a large scale, with bigger inventories and a larger volume of debtors, need to maintain a higher amount of working capital than a small business.

3. Length of the operating cycle: The longer the time gap between purchase of raw material and realisation of cash from the sale of finished goods, the greater the amount of working capital needed to fund operations during that gap.
