Secondary succession takes place in areas where a pre-existing community/vegetation has been destroyed or removed by some disturbance, but the soil (along with seeds, spores, and other propagules) is already present, so recolonisation and succession can proceed much faster than primary succession.
Three examples of areas where secondary succession occurs:
- Abandoned or fallow farmland — cultivated land left unused, which is gradually recolonised by grasses, shrubs, and eventually trees.
