Organisms living in extreme/stressful environments (e.g. deserts, polar regions, high altitude, deep sea) show several kinds of adaptations:
1. Physiological adaptations — internal functional changes that help maintain homeostasis:
- The kangaroo rat in North American deserts is able to meet its water requirement entirely from internal fat oxidation (producing metabolic water), and can concentrate its urine so much that it loses very little water while excreting nitrogenous wastes.
- People living permanently at high altitudes (e.g. in the Himalayas or the Andes) show acclimatisation responses to low atmospheric oxygen — increased red blood cell production, increased breathing rate, and decreased binding affinity of haemoglobin for oxygen, all of which improve oxygen delivery to tissues.
2. Morphological adaptations — structural body modifications:
- Desert plants such as Opuntia (prickly pear) have leaves reduced to spines to minimise water loss through transpiration, and photosynthesis is instead carried out by flattened, green, fleshy stems (phylloclades); they also have a thick cuticle and sunken stomata to further reduce water loss.
- Mammals in very cold climates tend to have shorter ears and limbs to minimise heat loss (Allen's rule).
3. Behavioural adaptations — changes in activity or behaviour: …
