AgF converts an alkyl bromide to the fluoride (Swarts reaction); NaI in dry acetone converts it to the iodide (Finkelstein reaction).

Reaction I — CH3CH2Br + AgF, Δ: Treating an alkyl halide (especially a bromide or chloride) with a metal fluoride such as AgFAgF, Hg2F2Hg_2F_2, CoF2CoF_2, or SbF3SbF_3 replaces the halogen with fluorine. This halogen-exchange reaction is called the Swarts reaction. Here: CH3CH2Br+AgF→ΔCH3CH2FCH_3CH_2Br + AgF \xrightarrow{\Delta} CH_3CH_2F (fluoroethane) +AgBr↓+ AgBr\downarrow. The reaction is driven by the very high lattice energy (insolubility) of the silver halide byproduct (AgBrAgBr) precipitating out.
