CrO4^2- has chromium(VI) at the centre of a tetrahedron of four oxygen atoms.

In the chromate ion, CrO42−CrO_4^{2-}, chromium is in the +6 oxidation state and is sp3sp^3 hybridised. It is bonded to four oxygen atoms arranged symmetrically around it, giving a tetrahedral geometry with O–Cr–O bond angles of about 109.5°. All four Cr–O bonds are equivalent due to resonance/delocalisation of the negative charge over the oxygens.
