A stock exchange provides a ready market, liquidity, fair pricing, mobilisation of savings, investor protection and acts as an economic barometer.

A stock exchange is an organised and regulated market where existing/second-hand securities (shares, debentures, bonds) are bought and sold. Its functions (any six):

  1. Ready and continuous market — it provides a convenient place where investors can buy and sell securities at any time, giving continuous dealings.
  2. Liquidity and marketability — investors can convert their securities into cash easily and quickly, so their money is not blocked.

  4. Mobilisation of savings and capital formation — it encourages the public to save and invest in securities, channelling these savings into productive uses and promoting capital formation.
