Planning = deciding in advance what to do and how; process runs from setting objectives → premises → alternatives → evaluation → selection → implementation → follow-up.

Definition: Planning is the process of deciding in advance what is to be done, how it is to be done, when and by whom it is to be done. It is a mental process of thinking before doing, and it bridges the gap between where we are now and where we want to reach. (As Koontz and O'Donnell put it, planning is deciding in advance what to do, how to do it, when to do it and who is to do it.)

Process (steps) of planning:

  1. Setting objectives — clearly defining the goals the organisation wants to achieve, for the whole firm and for each department.
  2. Developing planning premises — making assumptions and forecasts about the future conditions (market, prices, policies) within which the plan will operate.
  3. Identifying alternative courses of action — finding out the various possible ways of achieving the objectives.
  4. Evaluating alternatives — examining each alternative in terms of its advantages, disadvantages, costs and feasibility against the objectives and premises.
