That confusion and conflict is exactly what the principle of Unity of Command is designed to prevent.
In management, Unity of Command means that every employee should receive orders from only one superior. It is a formal, written principle first introduced by Henri Fayol, one of the founding fathers of modern management theory. The idea is simple: if a person reports to two or more bosses at the same time, they will face divided loyalty, conflicting priorities, and a breakdown of discipline.
The NCERT Class 12 Business Studies textbook states: "Unity of Command means that an employee should receive orders from only one superior. This principle helps in avoiding confusion and conflict."
Why does this matter in real organisations? Consider a factory floor worker. If the production manager tells him to speed up output, but the quality control manager tells him to slow down and check every piece carefully, he cannot satisfy both. The result is either poor quality, low output, or a stressed worker who ignores one boss. Unity of Command removes this dilemma. It creates a clear, single line of authority from the top to the bottom of the organisation.
This principle is closely related to another concept called Scalar Chain — the chain of command from the CEO down to the lowest employee. Unity of Command ensures that this chain is not broken by having an employee report to multiple people at the same level.
