Alien species become invasive and out-compete or prey on native species (which lack defences), causing indigenous extinctions - e.g. Nile perch in Lake Victoria and water hyacinth.

How alien-species invasion causes extinction of indigenous species:

  • When a species is introduced (intentionally or accidentally) into a new region, it may find no natural predators/competitors and reproduce unchecked, becoming invasive.
  • It competes with native species for food and space, or preys directly on them; native species, lacking defences against the newcomer, decline and may become extinct.

Examples:

  • Nile perch introduced into Lake Victoria (East Africa) led to the extinction of more than 200 species of native cichlid fish.
  • Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), the 'terror of Bengal', covers water bodies and kills native aquatic plants and animals by removing oxygen. …
