Ecological pyramids (of number, biomass, energy) give a simplified, incomplete picture of trophic structure because of several inherent assumptions.

Limitations of ecological pyramids:

  1. They assume a simple, linear food chain, which rarely exists in nature — real ecosystems have complex food webs where a species may feed at more than one trophic level.
  2. The same species may occupy more than one trophic level simultaneously (e.g. a sparrow eating both grains and insects), which pyramids cannot represent, since each species must be assigned a single trophic level.
  3. Saprophytes/decomposers, although playing an important functional role in the ecosystem, are not given any place in ecological pyramids.
  4. A pyramid of numbers does not take the size of organisms into account — a large tree (one producer individual) supporting thousands of small herbivorous insects can give an inverted, misleading pyramid shape. …
