When a person who has become physically dependent on a drug or alcohol suddenly stops taking it, the body reacts with a cluster of distressing symptoms called withdrawal syndrome.

Repeated use of drugs or alcohol can cause the body to develop a physical dependence, where normal body function comes to rely on the continued presence of the substance.
