The lymphoid organs are classified as primary (where lymphocytes are produced and mature) or secondary (where mature lymphocytes encounter antigens and mount an immune response).

Primary lymphoid organs:

  • Bone marrow: The major site where all blood cells, including lymphocytes, are produced (haematopoiesis). It is also the site where B-lymphocytes mature.
  • Thymus: A lobed organ located near the heart, below the breastbone. It is the site where T-lymphocytes mature and become immunocompetent. The thymus is relatively large at birth and continues growing until puberty, after which it progressively shrinks, and its production of the hormone thymosin (which supports T-cell maturation) also declines with age.

Secondary lymphoid organs:

  • Spleen: A large, bean-shaped organ that acts as a filter for the blood, harbouring numerous lymphocytes that mount an immune response if a blood-borne antigen is detected. It also serves as a reservoir for red blood cells.
  • Lymph nodes: Small, solid structures located along the lymphatic vessel network. As lymph slowly filters through a lymph node, it traps antigens present in the fluid, activating the resident lymphocytes to mount an immune response. …
