Certain bacteria and cyanobacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen into soil-usable forms and add organic matter, making them valuable, chemical-free biofertilisers in organic farming.

Bacteria: Rhizobium lives symbiotically in the root nodules of leguminous plants and fixes atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into forms usable by the plant, greatly enriching the nitrogen content of soil (and residual crop stubble further improves soil fertility for subsequent crops). Free-living bacteria like Azospirillum and Azotobacter also fix atmospheric nitrogen in the soil, benefiting even non-leguminous crops.

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae): Autotrophic, nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria such as Nostoc, Anabaena and Oscillatoria add organic matter and nitrogen compounds to the soil, increasing its fertility - they are especially significant biofertilisers in paddy fields. The symbiotic association of the water fern Azolla with the cyanobacterium Anabaena is widely used to enrich nitrogen in rice-growing fields. …
