Under incomplete dominance the heterozygote shows an intermediate phenotype, so phenotype ratio = genotype ratio = 1:2:1 in F2 (e.g. snapdragon/4-o-clock flower colour).

Normally in a monohybrid cross (complete dominance) the F2 phenotypic ratio is 3:1 while the genotypic ratio is 1:2:1 - they differ, because the heterozygote looks like the dominant.

But in incomplete dominance, the heterozygote has its OWN distinct (intermediate) phenotype, so each genotype is visibly different. Example - flower colour in the snapdragon (Antirrhinum) / 4-o-clock plant (Mirabilis jalapa):

  • Parents: Red (RR) x White (rr).
  • F1: all Pink (Rr) - intermediate colour (incomplete dominance).
  • F1 self-cross (Rr x Rr) -> F2:
    • Genotypes: 1 RR : 2 Rr : 1 rr. …
