Autogamy (self-fertilisation) fertilises using the same flower's pollen; allogamy (cross-fertilisation) uses pollen from another flower or plant, and plants have devices to encourage it.

Self-fertilisation (autogamy):

  • Pollen from the anther of a flower reaches the stigma of the SAME flower and fertilises its egg.
  • Requires a bisexual flower and synchronised maturation of anther and stigma.
  • Cleistogamous flowers (which never open) guarantee autogamy.
  • Advantage: ensures seed set; disadvantage: no variation.

Cross-fertilisation (allogamy):

  • Pollen comes from a DIFFERENT flower:
    • Geitonogamy: another flower of the same plant.
    • Xenogamy: a flower on a different plant (brings genetic variation). …
