(a) acid-catalysed Markovnikov hydration of propene; (b) NaBH4 selectively reduces an aldehyde to a primary alcohol; (c) the ethoxy group in phenetole directs nitration mainly to the para position.

(a) CH3-CH=CH2 --H2O/H+-->

Acid-catalysed hydration of an alkene follows Markovnikov's rule: H adds to the carbon with more H's, OH adds to the more substituted carbon (via the more stable secondary carbocation intermediate).

CH3–CH=CH2 + H2O --H+--> CH3–CH(OH)–CH3 (propan-2-ol / isopropanol)

(b) CH3-CH2-CH(CH3)-CHO --NaBH4-->

NaBH4 is a mild, selective reducing agent that reduces aldehydes (and ketones) to alcohols without affecting other groups. It reduces the –CHO to –CH2OH:

CH3–CH2–CH(CH3)–CHO → CH3–CH2–CH(CH3)–CH2OH (2-methylbutan-1-ol)

(c) [benzene]-OC2H5 --Conc. H2SO4/Conc. HNO3-->
