Threshold energy is the minimum total energy needed for a successful collision; activation energy is the extra energy the reactant molecules (at their average energy) still need to supply to reach that threshold.

Only molecules with energy equal to or greater than the threshold energy can react upon collision. Most reactant molecules, at ordinary temperature, possess an average energy that is less than this threshold. The additional energy that must be supplied, on average, to push reactant molecules up to the threshold is defined as the activation energy (Ea).
