Linkage isomerism arises when an ambidentate ligand (one with two different donor atoms) binds to the metal through either of its two possible atoms.

An ambidentate ligand has more than one potential donor atom, e.g. the nitrite ion NO2^- can bind through N (giving a 'nitro' complex, -NO2) or through O (giving a 'nitrito' complex, -ONO). [Co(NO2)(NH3)5]Cl2 (nitro-pentaamminecobalt(III) chloride) and [Co(ONO)(NH3)5]Cl2 (nitrito-pentaamminecobalt(III) chloride) are the classic textbook example of linkage isomers -- identical formula and composition, differing only in the point of attachment of the NO2-/ONO- ligand. …
