Metal carbonyls are held together by SYNERGIC bonding — simultaneous sigma donation from CO to the metal and pi back-donation from the metal to CO — that reinforces itself in both directions.

In a metal carbonyl complex (e.g. Ni(CO)4, Cr(CO)6), the bonding between the metal (M) and carbon monoxide (CO) has two components:

  1. Sigma (σ) donation: the carbon atom of CO has a lone pair of electrons (pointing away from oxygen) that is donated into a vacant, suitably oriented hybrid orbital on the metal, forming a M←C sigma bond.

  2. Pi (π) back-donation: the metal, in turn, donates electron density from one of its filled d-orbitals into the empty, low-lying π* (antibonding) orbital of CO. This back-donation strengthens the M–C bond and simultaneously WEAKENS the C–O bond (since the pi* orbital being partly filled reduces the effective C–O bond order below 3).
