Einstein's photon (light quantum) is a discrete packet of electromagnetic energy with specific quantized energy and momentum, travelling always at the speed of light.

  1. Energy: Each photon carries a definite energy E = h nu, where h is Planck's constant and nu is the frequency of the associated radiation. Photon energy depends only on frequency, not on the light's intensity.

  2. Momentum: A photon carries momentum p = E/c = h nu/c = h/lambda, even though it has zero rest mass; this is confirmed experimentally (e.g. by radiation pressure and the Compton effect).

  3. Speed: All photons travel at the same speed, c (the speed of light in vacuum), regardless of the frequency/energy of the radiation or the frame of reference.

  4. Interaction and neutrality: In a photon-particle collision (e.g. photoelectric effect), energy and momentum are conserved as in an elastic collision between two particles. Photons are electrically neutral and are not deflected by electric or magnetic fields, unlike charged particles.
