Question of 50

Q.A circular coil of radius 10cm, 500 turns and resistance 2Ω is placed with its plane perpendicular to the horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field. It is rotated about its vertical diameter through 180° in 0.5 s. Estimate the magnitudes of the emf and current induced in the coil. The horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field at the place is 3 x 10^-5 T.

Rotating a coil by 180° in a field reverses the flux direction through it, so the total change in flux is TWICE the initial flux (not just the initial value).

Coil area A = πr² = π(0.1)² = 0.0314 m².

Initial flux (plane perpendicular to B, i.e. normal parallel to B): Φi = NBA = (500)(3 × 10⁻⁵)(0.0314) ≈ 4.712 × 10⁻⁴ Wb.
