Business trades for profit with no minimum qualification; a profession renders expert personal services for a fee and needs a prescribed qualification and professional-body membership.

Four differences between business and profession:

  • Mode of establishment: a business begins with the entrepreneur's decision and the completion of legal formalities; a profession can be practised only after obtaining the prescribed qualification and membership of (and a certificate of practice from) a professional body.
