Sample survey = studying a representative part; cheaper and faster but prone to sampling error.

Meaning: In the sample method (sample survey), only a representative part (sample) of the whole population (universe) is studied, and the conclusions are applied to the entire population.

Advantages:

  1. Economical: far less expenditure of money since only a part is studied.
  2. Less time and labour: data are collected and processed quickly.
  3. Suitable for large populations: the only practical method when the universe is very large or infinite.
  4. Detailed and intensive study: because fewer units are examined, each can be studied in depth.
  5. Useful when testing destroys the item (e.g. testing the life of bulbs).

Disadvantages:

  1. Sampling error and bias: a wrongly chosen or unrepresentative sample gives misleading results.
  2. Not suitable for a small universe: if the population is small or highly heterogeneous, a sample may not represent it well. …
