Diatoms are ecologically important as chief oceanic producers, and their fossilised cell walls form a commercially useful material called diatomaceous earth.

Diatoms are microscopic organisms found in fresh and marine water; their cell walls are made of two thin, overlapping shells embedded with silica, making them very hard and indestructible. Over long periods, the cell walls of dead diatoms accumulate on the ocean floor, forming a fine, gritty sediment called 'diatomaceous earth'. Because it is gritty and largely inert, diatomaceous earth is used commercially in polishing, filtration of oils and syrups, and as an insulator.
