Each chromosome has a primary constriction called the centromere, which divides it into two arms. Depending on the position of the centromere along the chromosome's length, four types of chromosomes are recognised: (1) Metacentric — the centromere is located in the middle, so the two arms are of approximately equal length, giving the chromosome a V-shape when the arms separate during anaphase. (2) Submetacentric — the centromere is slightly away from the middle, so one arm is somewhat shorter than the other, resulting in an L-shape at anaphase. (3) Acrocentric — the centromere is located very close to one end, making one arm very short and the other much longer, giving a J-shape.
