Imbibition is a special type of diffusion in which water (or another liquid) is absorbed by solid or colloidal materials — like the walls of a dry seed, or dry wood — causing a large increase in their volume. The absorbed water does not form a true solution with the solid; instead it is adsorbed onto the surfaces of the hydrophilic (water-attracting) macromolecules such as cellulose, starches and proteins present in the dry material, along a water potential gradient (from higher water potential in the surrounding water to lower water potential in the dry material).
