Proposed by Singer and Nicolson (1972), the fluid mosaic model describes the plasma membrane as a dynamic, quasi-fluid phospholipid bilayer in which proteins float and drift, like icebergs in a sea.

Key features of the fluid mosaic model:

  • The membrane is built of a phospholipid bilayer, with hydrophilic (polar) heads facing outward toward the aqueous environment on both sides, and hydrophobic (non-polar) fatty-acid tails facing inward.
  • This bilayer behaves as a fluid, not a rigid solid — individual phospholipid molecules can move laterally within their own layer.
  • Proteins are embedded in this fluid lipid matrix, giving the membrane a mosaic appearance:
    • Integral proteins are partly or wholly embedded within the bilayer (some span it entirely, as transmembrane proteins).
    • Peripheral proteins are loosely attached to the inner or outer surface of the membrane.
  • Most membrane proteins, like the lipids, can move laterally within the plane of the membrane, which gives the membrane its fluid, dynamic character — hence 'fluid mosaic'. …
